T20 World Cup: Teams' access to the semi-finals depends on 'if only'
A small number of matches remain in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup in America and the West Indies.
Only four teams will be allowed to advance to the semi-finals out of the eight teams that competed in the Super Eight stage's two groups. This year's T20 World Cup had some major upsets: teams like New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka were eliminated, while America and Afghanistan shocked everyone by making it to the Super Eight.
But Afghanistan's recent historic victory over Australia has put the Super Eight stage predicament on the verge of "if but."
It should be remembered that England, South Africa, America, and the West Indies are in Group Two of the Super Eight stage, while India, Afghanistan, Australia, and Bangladesh are in Group One.
T20 World Cup: Teams' access to the semi-finals depends on 'if only'
Stage of the Super Eight, Group One scenario
India is in the lead in Super 8 Group 1 with four points after winning two games, according to the points table. Bangladesh has lost both of its matches, while Australia and Afghanistan have each won one.
Australia's T20 World Cup journey may come to an end if they lose their next Super Eight encounter against India. Australia will be eliminated if they lose to India and Afghanistan advances to the semifinals versus India after defeating Bangladesh in their subsequent game.
India would advance to the semi-finals if they defeated Australia, but a loss could be problematic for them, particularly if the margin of defeat is large. India has a robust net run rate of +2.425.
Afghanistan needs to defeat Bangladesh in order to advance to the semifinals. Afghanistan can still make it to the semi-finals if they lose to Bangladesh, even by a small margin. However, India must defeat Australia handily in order to achieve this.
Bangladesh, who have lost all eight of their Super Eight games and now have a net run rate of -2.489, may find it difficult to advance to the semi-finals. In addition to needing to defeat Afghanistan handily in the upcoming game, Bangladesh will also need to hope that India easily defeats Australia.
However, Group 2 has developed into a compelling scenario to advance to the semifinals.
Super Eight stage, Group Two situation
The West Indies are South Africa's next opponent; a victory would send them to the semifinals, while a defeat would only make their problems worse.
West Indies will go to the semi-finals if they defeat South Africa; if they lose, they will need to first maintain a strong net run rate and hope that the United States defeats England.
The US appears to have a very tough time making it to the semi-finals at the bottom of the points standings. In order for the USA to have a higher net run rate than both England and the West Indies, they must first defeat England. Meanwhile, they must hope that South Africa defeats the West Indies by a significant margin.
