According to Cricinfo, PCB's selection committee officially named Shaheen Afridi as Babar Azam's deputy for the T20 World Cup, which was rejected by the fast bowler.

The PCB selection committee also discussed other alternatives. But Shaheen was his first choice. The name of Shadab Khan, who has previously served as vice-captain, was also considered.
Nomination of Muhammad Rizwan as Babar's deputy was also considered, but this too was rejected. The committee wanted to appoint a younger player to the post.
